๐ข Sequence Spotter ๐
A sequence is a list of numbers that follow a rule. Being able to spot the rule, extend sequences and find missing terms is a key skill in Grade 6. You'll work with arithmetic sequences (add/subtract a fixed amount), geometric sequences (multiply/divide by a fixed amount), and special sequences like square numbers and triangular numbers .
โ Arithmetic Sequence
3, 7, 11, 15, ... โ add 4 each time (common difference = +4)
โ๏ธ Geometric Sequence
2, 6, 18, 54, ... โ multiply by 3 each time (common ratio = ร3)
โฌ Square Numbers
1, 4, 9, 16, 25, ... โ 1ยฒ, 2ยฒ, 3ยฒ, 4ยฒ, 5ยฒ, ...
๐ Golden Rules
๐ Arithmetic sequence: add or subtract the same number each time. The common difference (d) can be positive (going up) or negative (going down).
๐ข nth term formula: nth term = first term + (nโ1) ร d. E.g., for 3, 7, 11, 15... the 10th term = 3 + 9ร4 = 39 .
โ๏ธ Geometric sequence: multiply or divide by the same number each time. The common ratio (r) is the multiplier.
โฌ Square numbers: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100 (nยฒ). Square root reverses this.
๐บ Triangular numbers: 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28... (add 1 more each time: +1, +2, +3, +4...)
๐ Fibonacci-type sequences: each term is the sum of the two before it. E.g., 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21...
๐ก Quick Check: What type of sequence is 5, 10, 20, 40, 80?
Show Answer
Geometric! Each term is multiplied by 2 (common ratio = ร2). The next term would be 160 .
