Total distance around a shape
l × w = area
½ × base × height
Split into simpler shapes
cm², m², km²
The perimeter is the total distance around the outside of a shape. Add up all the side lengths.
Area is the amount of space inside a shape. It is measured in square units (cm², m², mm²).
A triangle is exactly half of a rectangle with the same base and height.
A compound shape is made from two or more simple shapes joined together.
| Unit | Used for | Conversion |
|---|---|---|
| mm² | Very small areas | 1 cm² = 100 mm² |
| cm² | Small areas (notebook) | 1 m² = 10,000 cm² |
| m² | Rooms, floors | 1 km² = 1,000,000 m² |
| km² | Countries, large areas |
