Applying multiplication in context

1. Times Tables (1–12)

Knowing your tables by heart is the foundation of all multiplication. Here are the key facts to learn:

Tricky ones to remember:
6 × 7 = 42   |   7 × 8 = 56   |   6 × 9 = 54
8 × 8 = 64   |   9 × 9 = 81   |   8 × 9 = 72
12 × 8 = 96   |   11 × 7 = 77   |   7 × 12 = 84
💡 Multiplication is commutative: 6 × 7 = 7 × 6 = 42. If you know one order, you know both!

2. Multiplying by 10, 100, 1000

When you multiply by 10, 100 or 1000, the digits move left by that many places.

× 10 → move 1 place left (add one zero)
× 100 → move 2 places left (add two zeros)
× 1000 → move 3 places left (add three zeros)
34 × 10 = 340
56 × 100 = 5,600
7 × 1,000 = 7,000
💡 We say digits "move left" not that we "add zeros" — but for whole numbers the effect is the same.

3. Grid Method (2-digit × 1-digit)

Partition the 2-digit number into tens and ones, then multiply each part separately.

34 × 6 = (30 × 6) + (4 × 6) = 180 + 24 = 204
×304
618024
47 × 8 = (40 × 8) + (7 × 8) = 320 + 56 = 376

4. Short Multiplication (3-digit × 1-digit)

Use the column method. Multiply each digit right to left, carrying when needed.

  1 2 3
×     4
───────
  4 9 2

With carry: 234 × 5
Ones: 4×5=20 → write 0 carry 2
Tens: 3×5=15+2=17 → write 7 carry 1
Hundreds: 2×5=10+1=11 → write 11
Answer: 1,170

5. Word Problems

Read carefully. Find the numbers and the operation. Then calculate.

Example: 8 bags, each with 6 apples. Total apples?
8 × 6 = 48 apples
Example: 7 shelves with 48 books each. Total books?
7 × 48 = 7 × 40 + 7 × 8 = 280 + 56 = 336 books
💡 Look for words like "each", "per", "groups of", "rows of" — these signal multiplication.

Example 1 — Times Table Fact

6 × 7 = ?

This is a key table fact: 6 × 7 = 42
Check: 7 × 6 = 42 ✓ (commutative)

Example 2 — Multiply by 100

56 × 100 = ?

Move the digits two places to the left (add two zeros).
Answer: 5,600

Example 3 — Grid Method

47 × 8 = ?

Partition: 47 = 40 + 7
40 × 8 = 320   |   7 × 8 = 56
320 + 56 = 376

Example 4 — Short Multiplication

123 × 4 = ?

Ones: 3 × 4 = 12 → write 2, carry 1
Tens: 2 × 4 = 8 + 1 = 9
Hundreds: 1 × 4 = 4
Answer: 492

Example 5 — Word Problem

5 boxes with 24 crayons each. How many crayons?

5 × 24 = 5 × 20 + 5 × 4 = 100 + 20 = 120 crayons
