Hundreds, Tens, Ones

How each digit in a 3-digit number has its own value

Place Value

What each digit is worth in a 3-digit number

Partitioning

Breaking numbers apart: 347 = 300 + 40 + 7

Ordering & Comparing

Using < > = to compare numbers

Counting in 10s & 100s

Skip-counting on a number line to 1,000

Rounding to 10

Finding the nearest multiple of 10

1. Hundreds, Tens and Ones

Every digit in a 3-digit number has a place value. The position of the digit tells you how much it is worth.

HundredsTensOnes
347
The number 347 means:
3 ร— 100 = 300 (three hundreds)
4 ร— 10 = 40 (four tens)
7 ร— 1 = 7 (seven ones)
๐Ÿฐ Think of a bakery: hundreds are big trays of 100 cupcakes, tens are small trays of 10, and ones are single cupcakes!

2. Place Value in 3-Digit Numbers

To find the value of a digit, look at its column.

Value of digit = digit ร— its column value
In 583:
The digit 5 is in the hundreds column โ†’ value = 500
The digit 8 is in the tens column โ†’ value = 80
The digit 3 is in the ones column โ†’ value = 3
๐Ÿฌ The digit 0 means that column is empty โ€” like an empty sweet jar! e.g. in 304, the tens column has value 0.

3. Partitioning

Partitioning means splitting a number into its hundreds, tens and ones.

347 = 300 + 40 + 7
More examples:
528 = 500 + 20 + 8
691 = 600 + 90 + 1
207 = 200 + 0 + 7 = 200 + 7
450 = 400 + 50 + 0 = 400 + 50
๐Ÿฉ Watch out for zeros! 207 has 0 tens โ€” that place is empty, like a donut hole!

4. Ordering and Comparing

To compare two 3-digit numbers, start at the hundreds digit and work right.

< less than  |  > greater than  |  = equal to
Compare 473 and 437:
Hundreds: 4 = 4 (same โ€” keep looking)
Tens: 7 vs 3 โ†’ 7 > 3
So 473 > 437
๐ŸŒˆ Start from the left! The first column where the digits differ decides which number is bigger.

5. Counting in 10s and 100s

You can count forwards or backwards in steps of 10 or 100.

Counting in 10s from 350:
350 โ†’ 360 โ†’ 370 โ†’ 380 โ†’ 390 โ†’ 400

Counting in 100s from 200:
200 โ†’ 300 โ†’ 400 โ†’ 500 โ†’ 600
๐Ÿญ When counting in 10s, only the tens digit changes. When counting in 100s, only the hundreds digit changes!

6. Rounding to the Nearest 10

Rounding makes numbers easier to work with. Look at the ones digit.

Ones 0โ€“4 โ†’ round DOWN  |  Ones 5โ€“9 โ†’ round UP
Round 467 to the nearest 10:
Ones digit = 7. Since 7 โ‰ฅ 5 โ†’ round up. 467 โ‰ˆ 470

Round 382 to the nearest 10:
Ones digit = 2. Since 2 < 5 โ†’ round down. 382 โ‰ˆ 380
๐ŸŽ‚ 5 or more โ€” the tens go up! Less than 5 โ€” the tens stay the same!

Example 1 โ€” Value of a Digit

In 347, what is the value of the digit 4?

Position: 4 is in the tens column.
Value: 4 ร— 10 = 40

Example 2 โ€” Write the Number

3 hundreds + 7 tens + 4 ones = ?

Hundreds digit = 3, Tens digit = 7, Ones digit = 4
Answer: 374

Example 3 โ€” Count on in 10s

360, 370, 380, 390, ? What comes next?

Each step adds 10. After 390, the tens column goes from 9 to 10.
That carries over to hundreds: 300 + 100 = 400. Answer: 400

Example 4 โ€” Count on in 100s

350, 450, ? What comes next?

Each step adds 100. After 450, the hundreds go from 4 to 5.
Answer: 550

Example 5 โ€” Round to the Nearest 10

Round 645 to the nearest 10.

Ones digit = 5. Since 5 โ‰ฅ 5, we round up.
40 in tens column โ†’ rounds up to 50. Answer: 650
