3. Writing Amounts

We can write money in pence (p) or pounds (£).

100 pence = £1    50p = £0.50    207p = £2.07

To convert pence to pounds: divide by 100.

56p ÷ 100 = £0.56
134p ÷ 100 = £1.34
207p ÷ 100 = £2.07 (notice the 0 in the tens column)

4. Counting Mixed Coins

Start with the biggest coin and add up one by one.

£1 + 50p + 20p + 5p + 2p + 1p
= 100 + 50 + 20 + 5 + 2 + 1
= 178p = £1.78

Tip: Group coins that make 10p or 100p together first!

5. Giving Change

Change is the money you get back after paying.

Change = Amount given − Price paid
Pay £1 (100p) for 37p item → Change = 100 − 37 = 63p
Pay £2 (200p) for 85p item → Change = 200 − 85 = 115p

You can also count up from the price to the amount paid!

6. Word Problems with Money

Read the question carefully. Decide: do you add or subtract?

Buying items together → add the prices
Finding change → subtract from amount paid
Example: 2 lollies at 65p each = 65 × 2 = 130p = £1.30
