🍰 Shape Fact!

A polygon is any flat shape with straight sides. "Poly" means many and "gon" means angle. So pentagon = 5 angles, hexagon = 6 angles! Honeybees build hexagon cells in their hives.

📖 2D Shapes

1. Triangles (3 sides)

Equilateral3 equal sides3 equal angles (60° each), 3 lines of symmetry
Isosceles2 equal sides2 equal angles, 1 line of symmetry
ScaleneAll differentAll angles different, 0 lines of symmetry
Right-angledMay varyHas one 90° angle

2. Quadrilaterals (4 sides)

A regular polygon has all sides equal and all angles equal

A regular polygon with n sides has n lines of symmetry.

4. Lines of Symmetry

A line of symmetry folds a shape exactly in half — both halves are mirror images.

Circle → infinite lines of symmetry
Square → 4 lines of symmetry
Rectangle → 2 lines of symmetry
Scalene triangle → 0 lines of symmetry

5. Identifying Shapes

Count the sides and look at the angles to identify a shape.

3 sides → triangle
4 sides with all equal → square or rhombus
4 sides with right angles → square or rectangle
5 sides → pentagon
6 sides → hexagon

✏️ Worked Examples

Example 1 – Counting sides

How many sides does a hexagon have?

"Hexa" = 6 in Greek
Answer: 6 sides

Example 2 – Lines of symmetry

How many lines of symmetry does a square have?

A square can be folded: left-right, top-bottom, and both diagonals
Answer: 4 lines of symmetry

Example 3 – Shape from description

A shape has 4 sides, all equal, no right angles. What is it?

4 sides = quadrilateral
All equal sides, no right angles → Rhombus (4 sides)

Example 4 – Equal sides

How many equal sides does an equilateral triangle have?

"Equilateral" = all equal
Answer: 3 equal sides

Example 5 – True or False

True or false: A rectangle has 4 right angles? (1=true, 0=false)

A rectangle always has 4 corners of 90°
Answer: 1 (True)
